Eight decades after Phineas Davis Junior High School opened its doors and later became an elementary school, the York City School District plans to close it.

In a proposal revealed to parents Monday night at Davis, York City district officials said they would like to renovate Jackson and McKinley elementaries and the Roosevelt Building, and close Davis Elementary, which opened in 1929.

They would also like to move fifth-graders from the elementary schools to the middle schools and realign some elementary attendance zones.

Davis closure rationale: In September, the district held town hall meetings to discuss renovation projects at Jackson, McKinley, Davis and Roosevelt.

Since that time, it became apparent it wouldn't be cost-effective to renovate Davis, said Brad Harman, director of facilities.

Renovating Davis would cost the district at least $5 million, because the state would only reimburse about $4.3 million of the $9.4 million cost, Harman said.

Many Davis classroom sizes don't meet the state standards when seeking renovation reimbursement, Harman said.
